March 14, 2006. Work done by WildLaw Staff Attorneys has helped the
town of Cordova, Alabama, fight off a controversial coal strip mine that was to
be in the community. The mine was going to be permitted by the Cordova
Industrial Development Board, an entity that apparently never bothered to
legally incorporate itself, as Alabama law requires. Further, the mineral
rights to be leased to the coal company appear to have not been owned or
controlled by the Board. Due to these legal irregularities dug up by Sandy and
Jason and due to the tremendous work of local people putting pressure on their
public leaders, the coal company involved decided "for economic reasons" to
withdraw its proposal to mine there.
WildLaw will continue to work with citizens of
Cordova to get permanent protection from mining right in the midst of their
