WildLaw Helps Town Fight off Coal Mine

March 14, 2006. Work done by WildLaw Staff Attorneys has helped the town of Cordova, Alabama, fight off a controversial coal strip mine that was to be in the community. The mine was going to be permitted by the Cordova Industrial Development Board, an entity that apparently never bothered to legally incorporate itself, as Alabama law requires. Further, the mineral rights to be leased to the coal company appear to have not been owned or controlled by the Board. Due to these legal irregularities dug up by Sandy and Jason and due to the tremendous work of local people putting pressure on their public leaders, the coal company involved decided "for economic reasons" to withdraw its proposal to mine there.

WildLaw will continue to work with citizens of Cordova to get permanent protection from mining right in the midst of their community. More information can be found in these news articles:
