July 25 2005. WildLaw and our clients Southern
Appalachian Biodiversity Project, Virginia Forest Watch, and Wild Virginia and
the Sierra Club released a new white paper on old growth logging in the George
Washington National Forest in Virginia. The report addresses the failure of the
Forest Service to conserve and restore old growth forest communities in the
Southeast, highlighting the Hoover Creek Timber Sale as a case study.
Discussing the ecological values of old growth forests, as well as the
obligations of the Forest Service to conserve them, this is a story of some of
the most treasured places in the Southeast and an account of the most
destructive forest practices still happening on our public lands. Most
importantly, this is a tool for individuals and organizations committed to
protecting and restoring the living history of our National Forests.
The white paper is available here in PDF format (1.8 mb).
