July 26, 2005. In response to review and comments by
WildLaw, District Ranger Paul Bradley withdrew the South Toe River
rehabilitation project in the Appalachian Ranger District of the Pisgah National
Forest. This project had called for the re-routing of a portion of the South Toe
River in order to redirect flow away from Forest Service Road 472, which was
undercut severely due to rainfall from tropical storms in 2004. The South Toe is
a renowned trout fly-fishing area, and is specially protected by the state as such.
WildLaw sent representatives, including summer intern Christopher Schenck, to visit the site of the proposal; and Chris filed
comments on behalf of Wild South and the Southern Appalachian Biodiversity
Project. We appreciate that Ranger Bradley, an avid fisherman himself, decided
against re-routing the river and are glad that WildLaw could assist on behalf of
its clients in this decision-making process.
